Are there any toys for sale from the movie Nim's Island?
My daughter is infatuated with the movie Nim’s Island. I’ve looked all over however, I’ve been unable to find any toys for this movie. Do any exist?
I honestly don’t think so. I’m not sure where you could pick one up, either. You could check the toys section at Walmart or another department store which would carry such toys. You could call various toy stores and see if they have anything like that in stock. I can’t say they will, but it’s possible.

As of right now, my wife and I are going to see the Pee-Wee Herman stage show thing and separately see this really great group called The Spires in January. I’m pondering seeing Quasi at Spaceland in February or March, but it’s an hour plus each way and I’m not sure if I’m that into it Awesome as they are that’s a lot of driving.

My friend saw The Chariot with Gojira, and said it was the most intense stage performance he had ever seen. I saw Suffokate last week, and mostly just played a game where I tried to guess where they were going to hit their bass drops during their set. it was pretty fun.

Saw Less Than Jake/ Cage/ The Swellers/ & Fishbone 3 weeks ago; got to finally see Trans Siberian Orchestra right after Thanksgiving; and on Saturday I was at the San Francisco Ballet’s "Nutcracker". It was *wonderful*.

Mayor Ritter To Father: “You’re Going To Kill Me”

“He kept saying, ‘We need to sit down and talk, we need to sit down and talk,’” Ritter told me this morning of the terrifying ordeal Tuesday night. “And over and over again, I asked him, ‘What’s with the gun?’”
It was just after 8 p.m., Ritter was in her bathrobe and slippers after a Broward County Commission meeting. Her husband, Russ Klenet, and children weren’t home. At one point, she said she told her father, who had come to her house that night with the gun tucked in his waistband, “You’re going to kill me.”
“You’re killing your mother with your
behavior,” she says Portner told her.
Ritter says that out of desperation, she grabbed her father’s wrist and tried to wrestle away the gun.
“For a few seconds, we struggled with it, but he is a very strong man,” Ritter said. “Honestly, I thought, ‘He’s 84, how strong can he be?’ But he was stronger than me, and I let go of the gun, and he pointed it at my forehead.”
Feeling more helpless than before, she says she told him she would sit and talk with him, but first she needed a glass of water.
“I have no idea where it came from; I just said it,” she recalled.
Her father said, “OK, but you better not call anybody.”
She says she then ran through the laundry room, which had a door leading to her garage. She locked the laundry-room door behind her, thinking that might buy her a few more seconds to run.
“I popped the garage door and ran like hell,” she said.
Ritter told her story — for the first time publicly — this morning on the phone. She called and said that although she felt I had been “brutally unfair” in my coverage of her during the past couple of years, she thought my post about her ordeal yesterday showed some understanding. Then she told me what had happened.
Once she escaped her house, she says her first thought was to go next door, but she was afraid he might track her down too easily.
“It was pitch black outside,” Ritter said. “I thought, ‘I’m going to run as far as I can.’”
She said she decided to go to the home of lobbyist and lawyer Michael Moskowitz, who lives about three blocks away, or .22 miles, according to MapQuest. She said she knew that Moskowitz wasn’t home, that he was at the Fort Lauderdale Commission meeting, and her real goal was to get to his wife and a “real friend,” Marilyn Leto.
Because she couldn’t run well in her slippers, she took them off and ran barefoot. When she got to the Moskowitz house, she banged on the door, but nobody answered.
“She didn’t answer because it sounded like somebody was trying to break in,” Ritter said. “So I went to the next-door neighbor, and they didn’t answer.”
Then Marilyn Leto came outside.
“I told her that she needed to call Russ because he was on his way home and he can’t go into the house with my dad there,” she said. “I told her to call 911.”
I asked Ritter how she was holding up. She choked up with tears.
“I was doing fine until I got on the phone with you,” she said. “I just want my dad to be OK. I had thought before this happened that he was getting a little more erratic than usual.”
She said she didn’t support her father’s run against Tamarac Mayor Beth Flansbaum-Talabisco, whom she endorsed before he entered the race, because she sensed his mind was going a bit with old age.
“I know that the mayor thing had made him so angry; it was this intense anger,” she said. “I know nobody understands about the endorsement. I thought that if I didn’t help him, he would recognize that he shouldn’t be [running for mayor]. The reason was he was acting… I thought he was flipping. I can’t pin a label on it. I just knew he wasn’t the same guy he was five years ago. I thought that maybe if I couldn’t help him, he would know this wasn’t the thing to do. I was concerned about him going out in the public and saying or doing something that would hurt him.”
?Things had been strained between them for months. Ritter said that when her daughter graduated from high school in May, he came to the graduation.
“He was distant, but he actually brought me a bouquet of flowers along with my daughter, Stephanie,” she said of the graduation. “I thought, ‘This is going to thaw, we’re going to work through this.’ But it didn’t work out that way, so I decided to stay away from him and not go where he would go. I felt like I was the flashpoint for his anger. Then come Election Day, we would try to figure it out and come together again. Everybody wants their families to be perfect, but everybody has issues. But when you’re me, it’s not like you want to talk about them, because it winds up in the newspapers.”
She said her dad had told her while he was in her home Tuesday night that the gun wasn’t loaded, but she didn’t know if he was telling the truth. She said it was a silver-colored Luger, likely a World War II relic (which is what Portner’s attorney, Michael Dutko, has told the media).
“My father had brought home a gun from World War II, and I knew that,” she said. “My first thought was, ‘Is that that gun, and does it work?’ But I didn’t know.”
She said the only time she’d had experience with any gun was a ”hunting” expedition in North Florida while she was a state legislator during which she shot at clay pigeons with a shotgun.
Ritter said that prior to the 911 call , her political career never crossed her mind because all she wanted to do was to “get back home.
“But I’ll tell you, since then, we have thought about it. I think I’ve had a really interesting year,” she said, referring not only to Tuesday night’s incident but to allegations of corruption and an FBI investigation. “I don’t know what to think. I’ve had people say ‘Yes, you’ll get through this’ and others say, ’No, you’re done.’ I’m not sure you can assess it three days later.”
She says she’s most concerned about her father right now. Portner, charged with armed burglary and aggravated assault, has been in jail since his arrest Tuesday night, in part because judges keep recusing themselves from the highly political case. He was scheduled for a hearing this morning.
“I hope the judge lets him out because I don’t think my dad belongs in jail,” Ritter said. “Partly because he takes care of my mom. She’s 81, she broke both hips last year, and she’s half-blind and half deaf. Me and my sister we do what we do, but he’s really her lifeline.”
Her parents have been married for 62 years. She says that her mother has asked to be alone since her husband’s arrest. She says all she wants is for her father to get treatment and heal the family.
“He is in such great health that I think that with the right help, he will get through whatever he’s going through,” she said. “This doesn’t seem to be unusual when people get older. They get angry and bitter and do things they’ve never done before that are completely out of character. My dad has always had a hot temper, but he’s never been physically violent, ever. I think there’s going to be some plan of treatment that will be required by the court. He just needs treatment. He needs someone to talk to.”

If one had a concern regarding a deterioration in their parent’s mental capacity and/or cognitive ability – especially in the setting where the parent of concern appears to act in the capacity of a caretaker to the other parent – wouldn’t it be better served to obtain a medical evaluation for the parent of concern vs. taking a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ approach?
Although statistically almost every family has a component of dyfunctionality, to believe that the parent of concern would somehow know that this approach was intended to be helpful rather than harmful is a mixed message at the least and a weak spin job at best.

Why are the bad kids in the family getting treated better than the good one?
One of my aunts and I are having trouble comprehending why my little cousin is getting treated so well by my grandma and the rest of the family. When I was young I was a VERY well behaved kid, shy, never asked for things because we had little money, obedient, got a full ride to college on scholarships. All of the aboved mentioned had me on a stict schedule almost like a soldier. This kid is 8, he talks back to adults, tortures animals, is not obedient, jumps on the couch with shoes, gets bad grades, kids call him a bully, and he knows what to say to make a person feel bad including adults (he’s made me cry a few times). I’ve worked hard to get to where I am now and I love my family but they let this kid get away with things I never got away with because he is "a boy and has no father." I don’t care if he doesn’t have a father. That is no excuse to give him everything he wants. He was raised by my grandma, my mom, and my uncles family all at the same time (including his mother but she worked). He has no rules because if he can’t get something at one house, another house will give it to him. We are lower middle class and he has an ipod touch, a wii, a playstation 3, a DS, a PSP and tuns of toys. When I baby sit (when his mom is on dates) he threatens me like "if you don’t let me I’m going to tell my mom you hit me" and they would believe the kid over me. I know he’s family but its unfair. When ever I don’t listen to them or I’m too busy with school work (premed) its the end of the world for me. I’m a horrible grandkid/ daughter/ niece. For christmas he gets something he doesn’t want, throws a tantrum and everyone feels bad for him. I feel like a child writing this but thats the point. I’m too old to be having rivalry with an 8 year old. What do I do?! I’m not exagerating anything about him if anything this brief overview is an understatement. When I started dating my boyfriend he thought it was typical family problems until the kid slapped him across the face one day and told him to shut up. Now he’s on my side.

how to get defamatory content removed from web without litigation?
Let me preface this briefly- I’m entering the job market soon and work in an industry that does fairly heavy background checks as before making anyone offers. Of course, in this day and age anything on the internet with my name on it will be found
My problem is that someone who I have had a personal disagreement with (to put it lightly) has, over the past year, endeavored to create a website where, amongst other things, they say some awfully terrible and untrue things about me. Like terrible enough to cause me to fail a background check. And untrue, as in so completely made up and imagined they couldn’t be further from reality.
It gets worst. I already took a few steps with the company hosting this site– I was able to locate them by using whois.org. It was one of those free/low cost sites… And i read their terms of services. The site in question was definitely in violation for quite a few of the terms so i wrote an anonymous letter documenting said violations with a request that, as the TOS said, the site be pulled down with no notice and the customer be banned from the company’s services.
There were two main violations- publishing a 3rd party’s (me) sensitive personal information (the site had one page with my name, social security number, address, CRAZY i know). The other was publishing content for the purposes of solely defaming an individual (the untrue things written that would screw my background check).
I gave the hosting company a month’s time to pull down the site or else"i will have to contact legal representation" and include them in litigation. two days later, the site disappeared. Relief, right?
well At the end of the month i checked back and the site was back up albeit without the SS#, but still plenty of defamatory nonsense and my full name and address all over it.
so essentially, the company ignored their own TOS and, with a clear violation, instead of taking down the site permanently "with no notice" asked the publisher to take off the really uncool stuff like my SS and allowed it to go back up. Totally whack.
the problem is my whole 30 days or else you hear from lawyer thing was a total bluff. I can’t afford to retain a lawyer… Im in my early twenties and have neither the time or money for any sort of litigation. I figured what i wrote should have been enough.
So i’m curious if anyone knows of a good way to get a site taken down without flying in the legal eagle? Or, at least, is there anyway to get them taken off search engine results so I can at least feel assured nobodys finding it? I understand that one way to get google/yahoo/msn to drop a site from its results is to overspam their listing servers with requests. Does anyone know a I could do this, somewhat intentionally, to this site to accomplish this?

Planned to have dinners between reporters and lobbyists that the lobbyists would pay to attend, so they could talk to reporters. That’s a little shady, but still more or less allowed. The idea of the press and the people who push money around Washington to promote legislative causes getting together for expensive, secret pow-wows that would line the pocket of the kind of off the record. You know, the kind where we don’t know who said what but we can still know who said it, which is a very specific kind of off the record called the “Chatham House Rule,” which you’ve never heard of because you don’t know bullshit journalism technicality lingo. You just know that “off the record” sure as shit sounds like “off the record,” and that Brauchli claimed not to know the dinners were any kind of “off the record.” Even Politico’s Michael Caldrone, when he talked to Brauchli about it, got the same impression.
